Monday Musings: 9.21.09 | New York Trip

I flew out to New York last week for some business and had a great time exploring the city.   New York reminds of San Francisco in that it felt like a bustling, exciting metropolis.  I loved it and can’t wait to return in November for Kelly & Jonathan’s wedding.  Things I would differently… I would not take the red eye because unless you are flying first class, it is hard to actually sleep onboard the 5 hour flight.  And I would not take an early morning return flight because I am not a morning person.  The trip totally screwed up my sleep cycle.

I flew Virgin America and it is definitely a nice airline; however,  one of the flight attendants took down my ThinkThank carry on and threatened to put it in cargo because it weighed over 15 lbs.  What?!  Unless you have just some light clothes packed, there is no way everyone’s carry on weighed less than 15 lbs.  And I’m a photographer, so my ThinkTank weighs at least 40 lbs with my standard gear.  Thankfully, the flight attendant didn’t follow through on his threat.  I’ll have to think about how I can get away with it again the next time I fly out for a shoot.

On my last night, I went out to Time Square and saw a model shoot taking place.  A big crowd had gathered and everyone was snapping pictures, but a woman who was with the shoot blocked people’s cameras or tried to push them away.  Uh, you are holding the shoot in a public place and you think you can tell us what we can and cannot shoot?  I told her that I had every right to shoot so she childishly stood in front of me.  Well, I had my 85mm 1.2L and was faster on the shutter button than she could block me.

Here are a couple of those shots:

Before I had left for New York, I attended the Ojai Camera Club – a monthly meeting of local professional and amateur photographers.  Each month, they have a special guest who speaks and then gives us constructive criticism on our print submissions.  This month, Gary Moss, a veteran commercial photographer was our special guest judge.  He gave all of my submissions an award of merit, but with some very good advice to make them even better.  Here are the 3 photos:
